SPECIFICATION: AS PER IS; 13778 (PART 5) / IEC 60851-5

This test is crucial for assessing the quality of insulated wire. A prepared sample, already twisted, is connected to the high voltage terminal. An alternating current (AC) voltage is then applied at a controlled and uniform rate of increase. The objective is to determine the Breakdown Voltage (BDV) of the enamel film insulation. As the voltage ramps up, the insulation's ability to withstand electrical stress from voltage and leakage current loads is evaluated. When the insulation fails, typically marked by increase in fixed leakage current to 5 mA, the voltage at which this occur is recorded as the BDV. The testing equipment is equipped with a built-in mechanism that ensures a consistent rate of voltage rise: 100 V per second for the 3 KV range and 500 V per second for the 15 KV range. This standardized approach guarantees reliable and comparable results, essential for verifying the dielectric strength of the enamel film and ensuring the wire's reliability in practical electrical applications.
